Description


Purpose:  

Provide a nutritional, safe, culturally appropriate food program for residents of the Crisis Shelter and Hope House programs. Empower residential clients with support for all aspects of food preparation and clean up, teaching skills to support a healthy environment in the YWCA, and that individuals and families can take with them.

 

Essential Duties:

  • Be active in kitchen and dining room area and communicate supportively and positively with residents.

  • Create menus for all meals and snacks, and stay within the food program budget by:

    • Prioritizing utilizing food resources provided through Food Bank and other donations.

    • Using coupon and sales effectively

    • Pursuing affordable shopping options

  • Plan daily meals to be high in good nutrition and promote healthful living, following guidance from the USDA recommendations.

  • Implement requirements for all food program funding as required by local, state, and federal guidelines.

  • Ensure meals are prepared for all residents of both residential programs, in partnership with residents.

  • Ensure meals are served with appropriate serving sizes for all residents of both residential programs, in partnership with residents and volunteers.

  • Engage residents in the work of cooking and cleaning, working with residents to ensure all clean-up of kitchen and dining room is completed thoroughly.

  • Complete needed cleaning that isn’t completed by residents.

  • Follow Safe Serve Standards and ensure the YWCA is meeting Health Department standards.

  • Provide training and orientation to Residents of residential programs to using the kitchen in ways that meet all health and safety requirements.

  • Host volunteer groups as available to support positive and healthy experiences for the volunteers and for residents of both programs.

  • Respond to and resolve client issues; create and maintain high quality work environment to perform at highest level.

  • Maintain an adequate inventory of all shelter consumables; including but not limited to, personal items, kitchen supplies, and food by utilizing shopping list.

  • Rotate stocks to prevent expiration and limit food waste.

  • Assist with site and building support, especially in kitchen, dining room, and pantry areas, including but not limited to, monitor freezer and refrigerator temperatures, and clean facilities.

  • Ensure all interactions with clients are trauma-informed and respectful.

  • Work as a team with all staff on duty, communicating urgent matters or important concerns regarding clients, and document in community log as appropriate.

  • Other duties as assigned to meet the organization's goals.

Education:

  • Associates degree in culinary arts or equivalent experience in schools, cafeterias, or restaurants.
  • CPR and First Aid certifications.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Strong customer service skills with ability to communicate in a professional manner with a wide range of people. Unequivocal commitment to pluralism.

  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion when handling potentially confidential or sensitive manners.

  • Strong time management skills; ability to take initiative to solve problems and work with minimum supervision.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, and Excel.

  • 1-3 years of experience in nutrition services or healthy meal planning

  • 1-3 years of experience with general office equipment (copiers, printers)

  • Accurate, organized, and detail-oriented, with ability to work under pressure and shift priorities in response to changing needs.

  • Ability to keep accurate records and files

  • Must comply with organization's policy of automobile insurance: must have a valid driver’s license and personal automobile insurance coverage.

  • Flexibility to change work hours as needed.

Physical/Mental Essential Requirements:

  • Walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching, moderate lifting and carrying (up to thirty (30) pounds).

  • Full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.

  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

  • Need to stand for long periods of time.

  • Ability to focus on detail and accuracy of work product.

  • Occasional high stress may be experienced in dealing with clients, staff and volunteers.
